Aerobatics and spin recovery training

As a follow on from the Stick and Rudder organised training sessions, Andrew Love has kindly made himself available on the 10th February at Rangitata Island, with a back up of the 11th .

This training has proved very popular with both Stick and Rudder, and CRAC members.  Weather and aircraft serviceability did limit the amount of flying we could do,  but do to popularity we will run this event with Andrew until everyone who is interested has got through.

Stick and rudder meeting

Sorry for the late notice. This is on at the CRAC club rooms 9/11 at 7 am all welcome

Dave Mitchell is going to give a workshop on “aircraft fabric through the ages” with a close look at the polyester used in our aircraft. He’ll be going back beyond WWII with material like Irish Linen and Madapolam.

Aerobatics and spin training

I have not spun an aircraft for years. I decided I needed a refresher, but as usual the idea grew, with the help of Dave Mitchell. He organised Andrew Love to speak at one of our meetings and give an insight into the cause and effect of aircraft departure from normal flight.

We have been fortunate enough, that Andrew has set aside some time in his busy schedule to take us up in the Yak or Airtourer.

We were overwhelmed with the response and are currently working through the scheduling. There is a possibility of some slots available in early December. Andrew has kindly agreed to revisit this in the new year as well.

We will keep you updated.

Meeting October

12th October at CRAC clubrooms, RT 1900 hours

We are excited to have Andrew Love coming to this meeting

Andrew is an accomplished aerobatic pilot and has a wealth of information on aviation.  Andrew flew solo for the first time the day after his 16th birthday and gained his PPL while working after school

In 2016 he won a warbirds scholarship

Andrew will give us a bit of a background about himself,  the warbird scholarship and his interest in aerobatics.

Then focusing on Brent Thompson’s  S10  –

How he prepares for the Test Flight –  weight and balance –  aircraft inspection  etc

The manner/order in which he conducts the Test Flight

How the S10 reacted to the various Tests.

His overall assessment of the aircraft as suitable for aerobatics

Its limitations – 2 up- for aerobatics.  Spinning  etc ?

how the various manoeuvres are started.  What control inputs are used.

this will be a lead in to an opportunity at a later date, to discuss the theories and results of unbalanced flight, flight upsets and unusual attitudes. How to recognise and react to these before they become a problem. The intention is to then, for those that want,  to experience these theories for real with the safety net of an experienced pilot sitting beside us in a aircraft rated for these manoeuvres.

Thanks to Dave Mitchel for liaising with Andrew to make this happen.

Stick and rudder meeting September

The next stick and rudder meeting is 14th September at 1900 hours, CRAC clubrooms, RT

Note we now meet on the second Thursday of the month. The flying enthusiasts and the stick and rudder group are joining. The  name of the new group will be discussed at this meeting

Also at this meeting there will be a discussion on various safety issues. For example the low level circuit at RT and how to safely integrate the 2 circuit heights, with consideration for fast and slow aircraft in the standard circuit.

CRAC safety officer Duncan Fraser will be there to help with any questions we have
